Life or Something Like It

This weekend I was at the Cambridgeside Galleria mall doing some shopping, when the entire mall lost power, which isn’t a big deal except that the event was foreshadowed about a week earlier by a deranged lunatic.

I was in a bookstore a week ago, in the computer section (buying a copy of Free Culture) when a disturbed homeless-ey person approached me and informed me that computers will be useless “when the lights go out” (delivered in a slightly unsettling & foreboding way). I assume this guy must hang out in the computer books section in order to share his doomsday message with unwitting technophiles. At the time, I simply reminded him that “when the lights go out” I’ll read a book, and gestured to the product I was about to purchase.

The irony being that this past weekend I happened to be in a computer store when the lights actually went out.

(”Life or Something Like It” refers to a not-so-great movie where a homeless man foretells the future correctly…)

I was there as well, and another strange aspect of the story is that about 15 after the power came back on the fire alarm went off. The interesting thing is that nobody moved, or realy reacted at all. Now, perhaps it is a reflection of the world we live in, or my own paranoid mind, but i was thinking “what if the power outage was part of a large plot? What if this is part of some kind of terrorist attack?” I then continued to eat my McThai food.
