Attending a one-day course by Edward Tufte
I found out today that in a few weeks I’m going to able to attend a one-day course taught by the master of statistical data representation, Edward Tufte, being held the last week of March in Boston.
For those who are unfamiliar with his work, Tufte is an expert on graphs and data. From his site:
Edward Tufte has written seven books, including Visual Explanations, Envisioning Information, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, and Data Analysis for Politics and Policy. He writes, designs, and self-publishes his books on information design, which have received more than 40 awards for content and design. He is Professor Emeritus at Yale University, where he taught courses in statistical evidence, information design, and interface design. His current work includes digital video, sculpture, printmaking, and a new book Beautiful Evidence.
And the best parts about being able to go are:
1. my employer is paying for it
2. I get a day off from work
3. all attendees receive a copy of each of Tufte’s 3 books and a poster
I already own The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, but I’m psyched to get the others.
Anyone in the Boston area with an interest in information design, graphs, data manipulations, etc. should tink about going. And if you can’t go, at least check out Tufte’s website or look for one of his books at your favorite bookseller.

I was wishing to go to this but i’m not able to pay. Looks really awesome though. We picture framers of Porter Square have long wondered where the heck those “Napoleon’s March” posters were coming from.
Yeah, I got some mail a few weeks ago on the course. I was totally intrigued by the Napoleon graph. People in my field (biology) are notorious for making bad data representations. Lucky you, not paying for it. You’ll have to spread your wisdom to those of us who can’t make it.
Oh, by the way, your link to Edward Tufte’s website needs fixing (it’s missing the “dot com” part).Hi… im the psycholog field… i am a graduate student at Brooklyn College. I hauled my butt to boston for the course. I found it very intresting, and informative (And got the books - it was worth going).
[…] On March 31st I attended a day-long course by Edward Tufte at the Copley Fairmont Hotel in Boston, as mentioned a few weeks back. Here I’ll jot down some followup thoughts. […]
