Gargoyles On The Square in Davis Square

gargoylespicLast night my family and I went out for dinner at Gargoyles on the Square in Davis Square, Somerville.

The food was excellent. For apps we shared the homemade gnocchi & wild mushrooms served with shaved parmesan cheese & truffle oil ($9) , as well as a serving of oysters on the half shell w/blood orange mignonettes ($11).

For dinner, I had the seared salmon with asparagus puree, tarbais beans, and pancetta ($20). The serving size was small for the salmon, but it was cooked about as good as you can get.

The rest of the family had either the the roast chicken with fingerling potatoes, garlic confit, and jus ($18) or the steak frites with red wine reduction and bearnaise sauce ($24). The frites came with more upscale-styled french fries, and probably made up the largest serving size of all the entrees.

Fo dessert, check out the the very tasty vanilla creme brulee ($7.75).

The restaurant bills itself as a bar and grill, but realistically falls somewhere between your usual bar and grill and a more finer establishment.

From their website:

Gargoyles on the Square, located in Davis Square, Somerville offers an award winning creative American cuisine with French influences without the pretentious prices.

The delightful, somewhat upscale neighborhood establishment has evolved into one of Boston’s top restaurants without losing its local flair. With its huge windows in the lounge, earth tones, candles and quiet dining room, the place is funky, beautiful, relaxed and fun.

The prices are about $20 or so per entree, but are worth the price. While Gargoyles probably doesn’t work as a restaurant to celebrate an important special occasion (there are plenty of really fine dining establishments to choose from in Boston), it definitely would make a great place to take a date. Also notable was the excellent and very friendly service (our waitress didn’t even flinch when my father ordered a Budweiser, which they don’t carry).

NB: Gargoyles does not take American Express.

In short: Gargoyles is a Boston area hidden gem, and is worth checking out, especially for anyone in the Harvard/Porter/Davis area. They also offer a cheaper bar menu with more traditional bar & grill fare (e.g. burgers), so their really is no excuse not make the trip.

I’d never even heard about it. Sounds good. But what does NB stand for?

NB is Latin for nota bene, used to direct attention to something particularly important.
