Autechre’s Untilted
Here’s a reprint of a review I wrote for a Sonic Heart, a new music magazine:
Autechre is always ahead of their time. On the surface, Autechre’s latest release, Untilted, is the next chapter of their trademark sound - pseudo-chaotic uber-synthetic instrumental beats, glitchy abstract rhythmic compositions, dense compositional arrangements, dentist-drill aggression, and the absence of any obvious melody. And while this may not sound very desirable to some, this is the future in disguise.
Untilted is not an album for those who lack patience. Like most of Autechre’s releases, don’t expect to fully appreciate it on first listen. Indeed, the abstract ultra-futurist manifesto that is Untilted is only clearly understood a few months after purchase, after other copycat artists have released more accessible interpretations of Autechre’s efforts (albeit probably less inspired than the original).
Autechre’s Untilted is bleeding edge and not an easy listen. But it will appeal to the more die-hard electronic music aficionado willing to endure the abstract cerebral rhythms for the high payoff later.
Pick up the hard copy at Newbury Comics and other select Boston stores.
