Somerville Open Studios
This past Saturday was Somerville Open Studios, a city-wide event where local artists open their studios up to the public.
Despite the rain, I spent most of the day walking around Somerville, visiting studio after studio. Generally, most of the artwork was pretty disappointing. Lots of uninspired mediocre pastel landscapes done by middle-aged housewives. As if serenity and calmness were the only emotions worth representing.
But there were some interesting and worthwhile creations. Particularly good were the works being produced at Vernon Street Studios.
Below is a sampling of some of the more interesting creations discovered during the Somerville Open Studios. My apologies to the artists for not remembering their names or directly attributing them (I saw a lot of art on Saturday). If you can ID the pieces below, please leave a comment.

cool photorealistic painting

grids of colors

the artist reponsible for this didn’t post his name or titles next to any of his artworks, and just sat in the corner reading. Instead of cheese or wine or snacks, he left a box of Fig Newtons and half a bottle of Jim Beam on the table.

this artist combined organic shapes with very techy schematic diagrams. One of my favorites.

The same artist as above

even more stained glass

book binding as an art form.

Oh cool. I missed SOS this year. I liked the ones you took photos of. Thanks for sharing those. My roommates and I have a piece by Joe Shepard in our living room that we first saw at a the Open Studios but bought years later.
