There’s always “The Dick Van Dyke show”, which basically put in place all of the plots that would be looked to for inspiration by sitcoms that follow (or were the retelling of a more traditional story like “The Gift of the Magi”.)

I was also always a big fan of reruns of “The Odd Couple” when I was a kid.

    WKRP in Cincinnati?

    Definitly not WKRP.

I know that there are ones that are missing here, plus this is a really generationaly biased list. I mean the Honeymooners was HUGE in it’s time. Hmm what about Alfred Hitchcock Presents, or the Twilight Zone? Do thoes count? They were funny sometimes …. right?

    +1 WKRP
    +1 Odd Couple
    I Dream of Jeannie
    Bewitched
    Green Acres
    Beverly Hillbillies
    The Bob Newhart Show

Alfred Hitchcock and The Twilight Zone aren’t situational comedies!

Yeah, i know that they are not techncally sitcoms, but they were great. So i guess i just really WANTED them to be included. what about the Garry Shandling show? Or Mr. Show? not prime time? hmmmm. Ok then … how about The Muppet Show? That was definitly one of the best of all times.

I am definitly against WKRP. I can remember being bummed out when that show came on.

OH, and I forgot about Goodtimes, and Get a Life.

I was on the fence about WKRP. I think of it as a show that had its moments.

Goodtimes, right. I used to fight with my sister over what we were going to watch, Goodtimes or Happy Days (they were on at the same time, first run). I was pulling for Goodtimes.

I wouldn’t mind an obscurity thread, either. My first entry might be “Hello Larry”. I still remember the theme music. If I remember correctly, it bit.

Sorry danish, but Friends has never been actually funny, interesting, or groundbreaking. The characters are boring and lame, and the stories are predictable and vanilla. It definitely doesn’t belong on this list.

God help you if you associate “comedy” with Friends…

well, danish, while i wouldn’t go so far as to say Friends is the best sitcom ever, i do think it’s funny! let’s see, not that anybody asked, but my favorite sitcoms include The Beverly Hillbillies, The Dick VanDyke show, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Night Court, Murphy Brown, Sanford and Son, 227, Newhart, George Lopez, Married….With Children, Home Improvement, Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, My Wife and Kids, but my vote for best sitcom ever has to go to: The Honeymooners
