Simpsons Seasons Six DVD: Worst packaging ever !

simpsons series six packagingLike I’ve done five times before, I made a special trip to the local Newbury Comics today to grab the newest Simpsons DVD. And I’m not totally happy…

My compaint: The packaging of the DVD is some flimsy plastic shell shaped like Homer’s head.

Yes, I have a tendency to be a on the anal side when it comes to CD/DVD’s. But no more than your average avid media collector, I think.

Anyway, if you are unhappy with the crappy box for Season Six, Fox offers you the option of writing an and requesting a traditional one. You can sign up at http://simpsonsbox.com , but only after they call you a whiner and a big baby.

And if you are like me and don’t want to see shoddy “creative” packaging used for season seven, you can write them a letter. For inspiration, here’s the one I wrote:

August 19, 2005

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
PO BOX 7849
Torrance, CA 90504

To Whom It May Concern:

Enclosed, please find my request for a replacement Simpsons Season Six box, along with proof of purchase and payment for shipping & handling.

I would also like to mention my dissatisfaction at the choice of packaging for Season Six. Here are my reasons for dissatisfaction:

  • It is difficult to store this packaging alongside more standard packaging, using common media shelving
  • This packaging does a rather poor job of protecting the disks
  • This packaging will show more signs of wear and tear than cardboard packaging (particularly cracked plastic)
  • Homer’s head is not particularly clever, funny, or amusing.

While these reasons may strike you as something a “big baby? might write, I hope you also realize that many of your customers feel strongly about these relatively minor issues. It troubles me to think that the creators of the Simpsons DVD were savvy enough to realize that many fans would not be happy with the packaging, yet chose to release it anyway. I can only hope it was not due to an effort to cut costs by Fox industry men in suits, but I have my doubts/suspicions.

I sincerely hope you revert back to the traditional packaging for Season Seven.

Sincerely,

Jarrod Trainque

i completely understand your dissatisfaction with this packaging jarrod. i saw it in the store today (very hard to miss) and thought not only about the annoyance of storing along side the other seasons, but more importantly: how long will these discs hold up inside homers head? its annoying that you must throw down more $$$ for the alternative packaging AND as you said, they obviously forecast collectors being unhappy with it.

what i don’t understand is why you haven’t called me back in months.

Couldn’t agree more about the horrendous packaging flop. Edsel and New Coke spring to mind. Even more astounding, beyond the mind-boggling arrogance of the whole campaign, is the stupidity of the design. We shell out some major bucks to buy these sets and we want them to last. The new design is flimsy, won’t stand up straight and is ergonomically unsound. Let me guess, you’ve already designed the one and only way to store these inane things and next you’ll be selling that to us as well.

    Count me out.

Fox, don’t be any stupider than you have to be. Go back to the old package.
