Visualizing hard disc space

This weekend I did some digital housecleaning and cleaned up some of the bulkier files on my hard disc. Overall, I was able to eliminate about 40 gigs of clutter.

To do this, I used a neat little utility called [Grand Perspective](http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/) which lets you visualize the files on your disc. It makes periodic cleanups a breeze.

The image below shows the current contents of my hard drive (after cleaning). Items are color-coded by filetype, with area representing filesize.

    There’s a feature like this that’s built in to KDE as well. It’s one of the things that I miss, being a Gnome/Xfce user. I’ll have to try this on the Mac!
