How to get free wifi at Starbucks, courtesy AT&T

AT&T is giving away free wifi to iPhone users. Don’t have an iPhone yet? No worries. The geniuses at AT&T have set this system up so that authentication is done using HTTP headers. Specifically, free net access is given to any user-agent that identifies itself as Mobile Safari. Fortunately, User-agent is really easy to spoof.

Here’s a really easy way to do it.

  1. Make sure Safari is installed (Windows users probably got it during a recent iTunes update)
  2. Go to” Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced”
  3. Make sure “Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar” is checked.
  4. click X to close the popup
  5. Go to “Develop -> User Agent -> Mobile Safari”
  6. Go through the AT&T signup page, and you’re done.

Happy surfing, while it lasts!

I had suspected you might be able to do something like this. Good to know it works!
